Small to medium sized, 6-15 m, evergreen trees with straight bole
and slightly swollen buttress or no buttress. Young twig greyish
brown, glabrous to pubescent (brownish-white). Leaves elliptic to
oblong, slightly coriaceous, acute to obtuse apex, acute to obtuse
base; margin toothed or subentire with 8-19 pairs of secondary veins.
Lamina glabrous to sparsely pubescent on both surfaces. Petioles non-
amplexicaul, with grooves, without wing. Petioles indumentum sparsely
pubescent. Inforescences terminal raceme, sometimes branched once,
moderately to densely pubescent. Flower with yellow petals, stamens in
2 conspicuous rings; fragrant; inner stamen, long, extrorse, purple with
yellow tip; outer stamen, short, purple (adaxial) and yellow underneath;
pale pink, glabrous carpel (5-9) with pale pink to white, extrorse style.
Fruits dehiscent, stellate, white. Seeds elliptic to oblong, blackish-brown
with red aril.
Distribution: Sumatera, Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo and West Java.
Notes. This species is known for its three varieties in Malaysia i.e., D.
excelsa var. tomentella, D. excelsa var. pubescens dan D. excelsa var.
excelsa.
